Kerry Goulet
Mr. Hockey at 40
I was recently given the responsibility to write a biography about
Kerry Goulet. You ask "Who is Kerry Goulet?" Well, the answer to that
question is very complex.
Here in Canada, in the mid 80's, he was among many young hockey players
who wanted to make a small claim to fame, but never quite attained it.
Travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic and he is well known in
Germany, as Mr. Eishockey. Dynamic, charismatic, chaotic, successful;
player, coach, General Manager and Mr. PR, he wears all of the hats and
he wears them well. To describe this man is not to describe his hockey
talents, as he took average skills and turned them into one of the most
successful playing careers in the First Division North, but to describe
the personality.
In his first year, back in 1988, he soon recognized he was more of an
entertainer than a star player. He understood that is what the fans paid
money to watch. The fans became his peers, not just paying customers,
and even today he takes time to talk to every one of them, whether they
be friend or foe. His passion is seen in his endless time spent for kids
of the sport, young or old.
With well over ten seasons, there are many accolades and trophies but
his biggest joy is to have a person request his autograph. Life in German
Ice Hockey is not all roses and through the adversity of teams going bankrupt
and not filing taxes, Kerry has been able to stay focused and positive
about the past, the present and the future.
To accomplishments, he only states that he is fortunate that at his age
he can still play a role in a young man's sport. His last season speaks
volumes to his statement. Playing with two outstanding imports, Jason
Krywulak and Todd Johnson, both of whom are from the University of Calgary,
he put up incredible numbers, 55 games, 51 goals, 101 assists for a total
of 152 points. He placed third overall behind his linemates. An unbelievable
accomplishment, 1-2-3 in the scoring race. Though the speed and the skills
have lessened, the drive, determination and passion still burns deep.
He hand picked five imports to join him this season in Timmendorfer Strand,
located on the Baltic Sea, and they were all exceptional players. More
importantly were all quality people. Corey Neilson from Teen Ranch was
the leagues top defenceman in points and penalty minutes, Jason Krywulak
was the top scorer in the league voted second best winger, Todd Johnson
was second overall and was voted the best centre in the league (both have
received several offers from the Bundesliga), Derek Ladouceur and Shayne
Green were recognized as the two premier two players in the league. With
this supporting cast Kerry was able to build a club that took Germany
by storm and as a result the ECT Timmendorf Hockey Club was voted the
Surprise Team of the Year. As Player/Coach and General Manager he was
able to solidify the clubs future as the foundation has been built to
take the next steps to advance.
Kerry's knowledge and understanding of the German hockey scene will be
a major asset in help him advise players in their choice to the the challenge
in Europe. The vast experience in all aspects of running of an organization
can only benefit any player, coach and/or team that becomes involved in
his new venture. Set to launch this season is a new advisory company that
will handle professional players who want to play in Europe. His association
with Dan Cameron and Peter Miller, will be a winning combination for any
prospective player. Included in the package will be contract negotiations,
preparation for travel and living in Europe, financial planning, tax advice
and 24 hour assistance in all aspects of the German experience.
